The U.S. energy giant is widely associated with the massive oil spill caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, in which Halliburton later agreed to settle with the U.S. government for $1.1 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reuters&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/cybersecurity\/top-us-oilfield-firm-halliburton-hit-by-cyberattack-2024-08-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first reported<\/a>&nbsp;the cyberattack on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. Department of Energy spokesperson Jeremy Ortiz said in a statement that, \u201cthere are no indications that the incident is impacting energy services at this time and DOE is coordinating with interagency partners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not uncommon for companies to shut down their systems following a cyberattack, with the goal of preventing the intruders from having continued access to breached systems or gaining access to others. Several companies this year, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/08\/17\/how-the-ransomware-attack-at-change-healthcare-went-down-a-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health giant Change Healthcare<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/06\/24\/car-dealership-outages-drag-on-after-cdk-cyberattack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">automotive software maker CDK<\/a>, shut down their systems following ransomware attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Halliburton spokesperson Victoria Ingalls declined to comment beyond the company\u2019s filing.
